Gerri (Short) Spesert
April 22, 1934 ~ August 30, 2017

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Gerri Spesert, age 83, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017.
Gerri was born in Haleyville, Alabama, on April 22, 1934 to Vassie and Luke Short - the third of seven children. She grew up in the mountains of northern Alabama and then moved to Bessemer, Alabama where she graduated high school.
She began work as a hairstylist at the age of 16 under the guidance of Miss
Hallie in Bessemer and continued that profession for 40 years. Gerri studied under Vidal Sassoon in Canada and styled hair in Germany, Canada, Mexico, as well as several locations in the U.S. where she owned salons. She was a trendsetter in both hairstyling and business.
After retiring from styling hair, Gerri became a Master Gardner, graduating from Utah State University and working at the Utah Botanical Gardens in Kaysville. As a lifelong passionate gardener, she often had strangers stop by her home in Roy to admire her beautiful yard. She won the Salt Lake Tribune’s Civic Beautification Award in 1993. She resided in Roy, Utah for 32 years.
Gerri was a creative soul who had various outlets for her passions and interests; among these were quilting, knitting, crocheting and craft work. Another lifelong pursuit was her painting. She created several works of art which her family and friends are fortunate enough to enjoy and treasure.
Gerri is survived by her longtime partner, Walt Forster of Clearfield; her daughter, Kelli (Jake) Germeraad of Vacaville, CA; her son, Mike (Patti) DeBoer of Canton, MI; her grandson, Ryan (Mary) Eberle of Vacaville, CA; her grandaughter,
Meaghan DeBoer of Canton, MI; her great-grandson Cameron Eberle, also of
Vacaville; her brother, Carlos (Noma Lee) Short of McCalla, AL; her sister, Margrett (Bill) Stauffer of Apple Valley, CA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; her parents; three brothers - Willard, Wayne and Tyler Short; her sister Sherry Slade; her nephew Ty Short, Jr.; and her niece Dawn Edwards.
The family would like to thank Dr. Vincent Hansen and his staff for the outstanding care given to Gerri. We would also like to thank the staff and caregivers at Chancellor Gardens, Rocky Mountain Care and Crestwood Rehab Center.
In celebration of Gerri, a gathering was held on September 1 at Chancellor Gardens in Clearfield, where Gerri lived. The family held a private graveside service Saturday, September 2 at Roy City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in honor of Gerri to your local American Cancer Society.
