Merle Christensen

BRIGHAM CITY – Merle Stander Christensen was born in Brigham City, Utah on April 20, 1913. Her parents were Nels Peter Stander and Frances Ada Atkinson. She passed away on September 28, 2014 of age-related maladies after a long life of more than 101 years.
Merle was born and lived her whole life in Brigham City. She married DeVere Christensen (deceased) April 6, 1931 in Evanston, Wyoming and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. DeVere and Merle were the parents of five daughters: Lois, Kathleen and the triplets - Sharon, Diane and Janice. The triplets passed away some years ago. Merle's parents and her two sisters, Doris Burton and Veda Knerr, are also deceased.
Merle had many tribulations during her life, the worst of which were the deaths of her husband DeVere, and the triplets, one at a time. She also suffered with polio from an early age, plus many other illnesses that she overcame as a result of her strong will to live. She attended grade and high school in Brigham and had many Church callings. She was a Primary pianist for many years. She was an active member of DUP, the Civic Improvement Club and the Samada Club. Merle was a wonderful housewife and bookkeeper for her husband DeVere who ran a successful plumbing and heating business in Brigham. Last year she was honored as one of the State's treasured Centenarians.
Merle was an extraordinary quilter, having produced dozens of creative quilts for family and friends. She was also an excellent cook and her house was always kept immaculate. The Christensen home became a beacon for many family visitors over the years. She always kept her garden and orchard well cared for and she canned the vegetables and fruits she harvested herself.
She is survived by her two daughters, Lois Wilson (husband Paul); Kathleen Sheffield (husband Brian). Merle and DeVere had 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
We want to express our gratitude to all relatives and friends, as well as those who cared for her while she was at Maple Springs Senior Living and the Hospice nurses.
We will greatly miss her and her wonderful example, teachings and for her generous nature.
