Shauna Smith Eccles — wife, mother, educator and friend — rejoined her Heavenly Father on September 23 2017. She was 85 years old.
Shauna was the 8th of 11 children born to her dear mother, Avera Marie Wright and Samuel J. Smith in Ogden, Utah on March 3, 1932. After graduating Ogden High School in 1950, she attended the University of Utah on a music scholarship, played one year with the Utah Symphony as an oboist under Maurice Abravanel before graduating with an elementary teaching degree.
She met a young, French-speaking fighter pilot and quickly fell in love. She married and was sealed to her eternal companion and sweetheart, Justin Rich Eccles, in the Salt Lake Temple on December 23, 1953 and together they had three children: Justine Eccles Hazen (Craig), Royal S. Eccles (Jill) and Richard R. Eccles (Stephanie).
In addition to raising her family, Shauna pursued her teaching career which led to three principalships in Northern Utah at Mountain View, Wasatch and Grandview Elementary. She was known as a strong administrator and passionate educator. She earned her Ed. S degree from the University of Utah simultaneously.
After retiring, Shauna and Justin served as Mission Presidents of the Belgium Brussels Mission for three years, overseeing the service of 438 missionaries. Shauna loved them all.
She loved spending time at the North Fork family cabins enjoying the splendor of the outdoors and playing Shanghai each week with her girlfriends. No one liked to win more than Shauna.
Shauna is survived by her husband of 63 years, three children, 11 grandchildren who called her “Mimi” and seven great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
Services for Shauna will be held on October 7 at 10 am at 5350 S. 125 E Washington Terrace, UT 84405 with family availability to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Justin would like to encourage donations to the Perpetual Education Fund.
