Doyle Jay Ellis

Doyle Jay Ellis, 58, of Blackfoot, ID passed away peacefully Wed., April 19, 2017 at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah while waiting for a heart transplant.

Jay was born on March 17, 1959 to Deonne and Larry Caldwell and Doyle Ellis. He was the oldest of 5 children. He grew up in the Moreland/ Pingree area and graduated from Snake River High School in 1977. During these years, he competed in rodeo and worked on the family farm. After graduation, he met and married Doreen Caldwell. They had 2 beautiful sons Dusty and David. They were later divorced.

Jay earned several degrees during his years including animal husbandry, electrical manufacturing and several irrigation endorsements. One of his biggest accomplishments was when he worked for research and development at Double LL. He designed and built a self-propelled 8 row potato harvester. He was able to take this to California and various other places to display and demonstrate.

He was instrumental in starting the Aberdeen golf course. During his life, he participated in several golf leagues and tournaments. He also played on many softball leagues. Many hours were spent in team roping, team penning and team branding. These hobbies were something that he enjoyed doing with his sons and friends. For many years, he was the commissioner of the Idaho Team Penning and Team Branding Association at the Eastern Idaho State Fair. He also ran the little cow poke rodeo at the Eastern Idaho State Fair.
In 1999 Jay joined the Blackfoot Elks Lodge. He loved the Elks and what they stood for. He was very active in the hoop shoot program, special needs and various other activities with the Elks. In 2007, he became the exalted ruler. He had the honor of being a past elk of the year, past officer of the year, past exalted ruler, past treasurer and was currently serving as a trustee. Also in 2007, he married Betty Christiansen. They both continued to be active with Elks activities. They enjoyed golfing together, trips to Florida and North Carolina, and summer BBQ with friends and family.
Jay is survived by his wife Betty; sons, Dusty, David, Eric (Stephanie), Charles (Kim); daughters Kimberly (Shawn), Hailey (Travis), his mother Deonne Caldwell; sisters Debbie (Scott) Ranstrom, Laura Monroe, Jennifer (Jeff) Belnap and Barb Ellis; 5 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that he loved and adored.
He was preceded in death by his fathers, Larry Caldwell and Doyle Ellis; brother, Jeff Ellis; brother-in-law, Dave Monroe, and son, Doug.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elks Lodge, 123 N Ash St., Blackfoot. Viewings will be held Sunday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Elks Lodge prior to the services. Interment in the Moreland City Cemetery.
