Obituary

Leah Cowan Graves

Leah Cowan Graves, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 12, 2017. She was born on October 3, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Almaran Cowan and Lela Findlay Cowan, and was the second of two children.

Leah had a love for education. After graduating from East High School, she went on to the University of Utah and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education. While at the University of Utah, she met her eternal sweetheart. Joseph and Leah were married on June 9, 1953. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple.

Leah began her teaching career in 1953 working with elementary aged children. She took time off to raise and spend time with her family, returning to teach in 1972. She taught at Club Heights Elementary, North Ogden Elementary, Burch Creek Elementary, and West Weber Elementary, where she retired in 1992, completing 25 years of teaching. She loved taking field trips with her classes to the Environmental Center, where they enjoyed bird watching. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed time spent with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Leah and Joseph had four children. They lived in Ogden, and later, built a home in North Ogden, where they raised their family. Leah was a member of the Ben Lomond 9th Ward and had a sincere love for Christ and His atonement, and a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was also a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Leah loved many things, including gardening, bird watching, reading, doing puzzles, needlepoint, genealogy work, and Square Dancing with her husband. She looked forward to her trips to Salt Lake to see the plays at the Hale Center Theater, and her weekly trips to the Temple with friends.

Leah is survived by her four children, Roger (Ellen) of Taylorsville, UT, Mark (Kristin) of Kent, WA, Leeza (Dave) of Sumter, S.C., and Matthew (Heather) of North Ogden UT, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one sister, Cyntha Hirst, of Orem UT. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Graves, her parents, Almaran and Lela Cowan, and one daughter in law, Jill.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 19th, 2017 at 11 am, at the Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden Utah, with a brief viewing beforehand from 10-10:45 am at the Ben Lomond 9th Ward, 575 E 3100 N, North Ogden, Utah.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to Dementia and Alzheimer's research.

The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Quail Meadow Assisted Living and Memory Care for the exceptional love, support, compassion, and care they gave to Leah.

Arrangements entrusted to Myers Ogden Mortuary.
