Steven Lewis Mayfield

Steven Lewis Mayfield passed away peacefully at his home in Layton, Utah on March 30, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Steve was born on February 7, 1952, in San Francisco, California to Richard Dale Mayfield and Verna Mary Watts, the second of two sons. He grew up in Walnut Creek where he enjoyed photography, history and learning about his Mormon heritage.

After serving a mission to Colorado and Nebraska, Steve worked for four years as a file clerk in the San Francisco FBI office and for nine years as a deputy sheriff in the Jefferson County (Colorado) Sheriff’s Office. In 1990 he moved to Layton, Utah and was hired as a crime scene photographer and crime lab tech in the Salt Lake City Police Department where he spent the rest of his thirty-eight year career in law enforcement.

Steve had an avid, undying interest in Mormon history, as well as photography, and was present at numerous conferences and symposia taking pictures. His thousands of photos were just a part of his extensive collection documenting the history and events of the LDS Church. While known as a documentarian, Steve was also considered an expert in the Mark Hofmann forgeries and bombings and happily shared this expertise with others.

Steve leaves behind his brother, R. Alan Mayfield; his nieces, Sonya (Jeffrey) Raetzke, Kristi (Jared) Ruegsegger, Alicia (David) Furse; and numerous relatives and friends who will miss him and his influence.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 10 a.m. at the Suntrails LDS Ward Chapel, 2160 West Gordon Ave, Layton, Utah. Family and friends may gather Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church and Saturday prior to services from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Rocky Ridge Cemetery in Rocky Ridge, Utah.
