Kathleen Shino Obituary

Kathleen Judith Shino passed peacefully in her Layton, UT home on June 6, 2019, succumbing to pancreatic cancer.  She fought the good fight and was with her family at the end.

Kathy married her high school sweetheart, Yoshiharu, in 1970 and supported his military career while raising their family from Southern California to Oklahoma, Colorado, Pennsylvania (2x), Germany (2x) and Maryland.  Along the way, she continued to better herself by taking classes at various local and community colleges near Yoshie’s duty stations while also caring for her two kids, Noel and Greg, and routinely working part-time.

In 1991, Kathy earned her B.A. from the University of Maryland, while finishing her coursework abroad in Germany.  With this feat accomplished, she would go on to earn her MBA from Hood College in Frederick, MD.  She set a shining example not only for her kids, but her entire family.

Defining her own career, she worked tirelessly at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD and earned her reputation for tenacity making sure cancer research received grant funding by assisting teams around the country with their applications.  Her work eventually led her to private consulting and speaking engagements.

Kathy was passionate about books and all things reading, considering the library almost more important than grocery stores.  She also enjoyed gardening and was proud of her involvement with the Davis County Master Gardening Program.

Kathy is survived by her devoted husband, Yoshie, two loving children, Noel and Gregory, four grandchildren, Scott, Natalie, Connor and Colton and two great-grandchildren, Lilly and Vanessa.

Her family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and staff at Huntsman Cancer Hospital and Community Nursing Services for their unwavering professionalism, endearing compassion and quality care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a cancer research foundation of your choice.
