Susan Humphrey Obituary

Susan Ann Humphrey, Sam as she preferred to be called, of North Ogden, UT, passed away peacefully at home of natural causes, on December 8, 2019.

Susan Ann White was born in San Diego, CA on January 19, 1947. She grew up in Needles, CA and Phoenix, AZ, with her maternal grandparents, then with her mother, step father, and younger brother, when she took her step father’s last name McCullough. She graduated from Needles High School. She attended colleges in Flagstaff, AZ, and San Bernardino, CA and graduated with an A.A. from San Bernardino Valley College.

Sam moved to San Diego, became a Catholic, and got married. She had two daughters, one severely developmentally disabled. Sam faced many challenges and was successful in most of her struggles while raising her daughters. Her faith was central to family life and her goal was to get her daughters into heaven. She was a parishioner of St. Pius X, in Chula Vista, CA.

Sam had various occupations including positions in retail, waitressing, legal secretary, music teacher, church organist, sample seamstress, and retired as a blackjack dealer. She enjoyed playing the piano for her church summer drama productions. She often volunteered at her church in various aspects.

In 1992, her life changed drastically when her developmentally disabled daughter passed away and her husband left shortly thereafter. She went back to college for awhile, and then went to school to become a blackjack dealer. She dealt blackjack for several years at a San Diego Indian casino, was nominated for an excellence award, and eventually retired from it to move to North Ogden, UT with friends.

Sam was very talented in many aspects. She was proficient in many musical instruments. She was talkative, humorous, and honest in her speech. She was passionate about conservative politics. She loved learning about her favorite animals, bald eagles and meerkats. She also enjoyed playing games on her computer. She often tried to help those around her, including opening her home to others at times. She was a very loving, giving person.

Sam was predeceased by her daughter Amy Marie Humphrey. She is survived by her daughter, Juliana Marie Humphrey, her daughter’s fiancé Roger Robert Damptz, her brother Ted Otis McCullough Jr., as well as family and friends.
