It is with deep sorrow and yet immense joy for her journey, our angel, "energizer bunny" Ann Sessions, has gone home to the father of us all and into the long-awaited arms of her beloved husband, Dean; her parents, siblings, grandparents, family, and friends who have saved her a seat at the table of eternal happiness. With love and cherished memories, we celebrate her remarkable life. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on the evening of 11 June, 2026.
We knew this day would come, and though our hearts are broken, we know she is at peace and reunited with those who have gone before her. For 99 years, Mom gave all she had. She was born on March 7, 1927, in Alexander, Idaho, to Dan and Sadie Popa. She was raised with her three brothers, Floyd, Dewey, and Dallas, and her sister, Mary. When Mary died in childbirth, her baby daughter, Mary Ruth, was brought into their home, and raised as her sister.
Mom grew up in the small town of Alexander in a beautiful old hotel that originally served as a hostel for railroad workers during the early 1880s. As children, we loved visiting our grandparents' home with its many "doors" and still talk about the memories, stories, and love shared within those walls. A song titled *Tears of an Old House*, written by Kirby Jonas, was inspired by the old house that helped shape her life. The house has been photographed by hundreds of people as it stands quietly alone in a field.
After graduating from high school, mom moved from Alexander, Idaho, to Clearfield, Utah, where she lived with her aunt and uncle, Carl and Leora Ashbaker. It was there that she met her sweetheart, Dean Sessions. They were married in Seattle, Washington, on August 6, 1944, while Dad was on shore leave with the United States Navy. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 6, 1952. Mom was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings throughout her life. She dearly loved her ward family.
Mom is survived by her children, Gary (Connie) Sessions, Peterson, Utah; Judy (Rawland) Lemmons, Clinton, Utah; Jean (Leroy) Webb, West Point, Utah; and Mark (Mary) Sessions, West Point, Utah; 17 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 24 (and counting) great-great-grandchildren and the blessing of living long enough to have a five-generation family photographs with many of them. She is also survived by her sister’s daughter, Mary Ruth Caress, West Haven, Utah. Mom’s family meant everything to her. She attended so many of their events and enjoyed being with family every chance she had.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, of 66 years of marriage and now with eternity together; her parents, Dan and Sadie Popa; her sister, Mary Childs; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dewey (Rae) Popa ; Dallas (Maxine) Popa ; Floyd Popa; daughter-in-law Karen Sessions; grandson Greg Wynn; great-granddaughter, Alia Reber; parents-in-law Lawrence and Zilla Sessions; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Howard (Norma) Haymond, and Rulon (Maxine) Sessions.
Mom packed a lot into her 99 years. She attended school in Alexander, Idaho, worked during World War II at the Naval Base in Clearfield, Utah, and later began a career at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. That career eventually took her to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, where she retired with a total of 33 years of federal service. Mom attended and graduated from the Air War College in Alabama, where she excelled.
After returning to Utah, mom enjoyed working alongside dad as an usher at the Salt Palace and Delta Center, where they made countless friends. She served there for more than 25 years and became acquainted with many coaches and players. Mom and Dad also volunteered during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where Mom worked events at the Delta Center. Together, they loved traveling, salmon fishing in Washington, hunting, fishing, cruising, and spending time with family and friends.
Mom also enjoyed her "guilty pleasure" of trips to Wendover where she told us she was just going out for her favorite “hot turkey sandwich”, or so she claimed, with anyone willing to take her. As a family, we shared many memorable vacations, but three stand out above the rest: celebrating Mom and Dad's 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii; their 60th anniversary on an Alaskan cruise and taking a fall foliage cruise from New York through New England. That final trip came just one month before Dad passed away in 2011.
Mom was blessed with wonderful friends and neighbors who became family. We express our heartfelt love and appreciation to her amazing neighbors, the Peterson’s, Moore’s, and Francis’s, and her extended family, the Gobles, who faithfully kept her on "Ann Watch" and looked after her whenever she was home alone. They watched over her, cared for her, and ensured she always felt loved and was safe.
She lived a life filled with love, devotion, and spunk. Her determination to "do things her way" remained strong even after suffering a stroke in 2022. She insisted on living independently and caring for herself for as long as possible. This past year, Jean and Zero (Leroy) moved in with her and lovingly cared for her while still honoring her independence. A special thanks to Zero who was up early every morning to fix her breakfast. He cleaned, moped, swept and vacuumed as Jean was recovering from back surgery.
Recently, mom suffered a broken hip after a fall and worked tirelessly to recover. She spent several weeks at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital, where she received exceptional care from the staff and her dear friend, Dew. We are also grateful for the love and support provided by her hospice nurse, Kirsten, and her CNA, Ashley, from Utah Home Health Care and Hospice, who cared for her so tenderly in her home these past several weeks.
