Birdice Delone Crouch Markham Obituary (1912 - 2015)

Birdice Crouch Markham Birdice Delone Crouch Markham, 103, died Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Fairfield Village Assisted Living in Layton, Utah, from cause's incident to her age. She was born in Willard, UT, on March 13, 1912, the youngest of nine and last surviving child of William A. and Eliza Mortensen Crouch. She attended Ogden City Schools, graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber State College. An employee of Mountain Bell Telephone Co., she retired after 45 years of service, and was a member of Telephone Pioneers. She was a volunteer at the McKay-Dee Hospital for l0 years, and had been a volunteer at the Weber County Library. Except for 3 years in Concord, CA, she had lived most of her life in the Ogden area. She married Ira J. Markham in the Ogden LDS Temple on August 16, 1980. A granddaughter of Mormon Pioneers, Birdice was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served an Eastern States Mission, participating twice in the Palmyra, NY, pageant, "America's Witness for Christ." She was assigned to the Mission office in New York City for 9 months and was responsible for the membership records of more than 4, 000 members in the Mission. She was a teacher in Sunday School and Relief Society, Visiting Teacher, Visiting Teacher Supervisor, Young Women President, member of the North Weber Stake MIA Board, Roy North Stake Family History Extraction Director, Ward News Letter Editor, and for 25 years she was Membership Clerk with eight different bishops in two Ogden Wards. Birdice enjoyed music, and she played the piano and organ in Primary, Sunday School, MIA, Relief Society, Ward, Ogden Stake Organist at the Ogden Tabernacle, and was one of the Ogden Temple Organists. She was also given the privilege of playing the organs in the Conference Center and the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City for a few glorious minutes. She also sang in Ward and Stake Choirs. Birdice enjoyed traveling, visiting most of the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii; and also Canada and Mexico. She met her future husband on one of her trips to Mexico. She also visited many of the European countries in addition to Russia, Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Because her family needed to know more about their ancestry, Birdice wrote a book of family history beginning with her great-grandparents. She often expressed her love to her family, and she wanted to assure her friends and neighbors of her love for them. They all were important in making her life such a wonderful Journey. She is survived by a stepson, Jay (Joy) Markham, Las Cruces, NM; Orem; 7 step-grandchildren; many step-great grandchildren; a nephew, Willis (Dona) Crouch, Layton; nieces Laurene (Ken) Yearsley, South Ogden; Norma Brisk, Hurricane, UT; Delone Johnson, Hildale, UT; and many grandnephews and grandnieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira J. Markham, a stepdaughter, Lucretia (Ralph) Jones, her parents, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, one nephew and 7 nieces. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 28, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Roy 11th Ward, 4250 S. 2I75 W., Roy, UT. Friends may call at Myers Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday at the church from 9:40 to 10:40 a.m. prior to services.
