Chris Zarkou Obituary (1918 - 2013)

Chris Zarkou Ogden - Chris Zarkou, 95, departed this earth on Dec. 19, 2013 after a wonderful life that spanned almost a century. Everyone who came to know Chris was better for the experience. His zest for life was never ending and that he shared with everyone he met. Chris was born to Christ and Sigrid Zarkou on Feb. 7, 1918 in Salt Lake City where he lived and attended school until joining the Navy in January 1941. He married the love of his life, Maudie May (Tex) Starkey, on Dec. 1, 1946. Chris proudly served in the US Navy for 22 years during WWII and Korea. After retiring from the Navy in 1963 he and the family returned to live in Roy. He worked at Defense Depot Ogden as an expeditor for 20 years until retiring. Chris always respected the past and took great care of the many things he collected. His Navy Career has always been displayed on the walls of his home. His many visitors were amazed at his many accomplishments and what a wondrous career he enjoyed. He was known to many around Roy as "The Quarter Man", his rewards were the smiles on the children and parents faces as he gave them quarters to buy candy. He bought and delivered hundreds of small stuff toys to the hospitals children's wards, to brighten their stay. He visited the assisted living home in Roy, bringing candy and Coke Cola to the residents. He spent time with them and left them smiling. For all that had the pleasure to know Chris Zarkou, life will always be a happier place. His friends and family will have a Coke in his honor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tex and son, Andy. He is survived by his daughters, Naomi "Kathy", Cathy and son, Will; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Charie) Zarkou and numerous nieces and nephews. No one was a stranger to Pops and everyone described him as "the happiest person they have ever known". He had many sayings that we will continue to use, especially, "Today is the best day Ever!" Services will be conducted in Chris's favorite time of the year, Spring or Summer. The family will place a notice so anyone wishing to celebrate his life can attend.
