Darel Orval Johnson Obituary (1926 - 2015)

Darel O. Johnson BRIGHAM CITY - Darel Orval Johnson, 89, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in Logan, Utah. Darel was born on February 1, 1926 in Brigham City, Utah a son of Ella Cleora Sackett and Henry Oluf Peter Johnson. He attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated from Box Elder High School. Darel served in World War II in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, landing with the first wave of Marines at Blue Beach on Iwo Jima. He married his sweetheart Janice Louise Woodruff on August 15, 1947; they were sealed for eternity August 6, 1948 in the Logan Temple. Janice passed away on April 4, 2007. Darel graduated from Utah State Agricultural College and later received a master's degree from Utah State University. He spent his career in Box Elder School District as a teacher and administrator; he loved his students and was dearly loved by his students. Darel served as President of the Box Elder Education Association and as Board of Trustees for the Utah Education Association Darel was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a Bishop, High Council, teacher and serving two missions as directors of the visitor center in Winter Quarters, Nebraska and at Temple Square. He was a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers. Darel loved gardening and caring for his yard. Darel is survived by his four children: Julie Pehrson, Hyrum, UT; Chris (Carol) Johnson, Smithfield, UT; Debra (Kenneth) Swenson, Salem, UT; Rick (Tiffanie) Johnson, Brigham City, UT. Also loved and claimed a foster son Tony (April) Platero, Layton, UT; 24 grandchildren and 68 great-grandchildren. Also a sister Eloise Johnson Wheelwright, Scottsdale, AZ and sister-in-law Colleen Peters Johnson, Brigham City, UT. Preceded in death by his parents, wife Janice, siblings: Karen Johnson, Henry Dee Johnson and Charles Blaine (Marion Palmer) Johnson, grandson Clark Henry Pixton, daughter-in-law Jan Andersen Platero and brother-in-law Robert L. Wheelwright. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Brigham City 3rd Ward Chapel, 203 W. 200 N., Brigham City, UT. Viewings will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City, UT and on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Combined Veterans.
