Delos Eugene Bingham Obituary (1911 - 2006)

Delos Eugene Bingham died at his home surrounded by his loving family on August 4, 2006, two months short of his 95th birthday. He was born on October 3, 1911 in Ogden, Utah, the oldest son of Adelbert Willard Bingham and Hannah Rhodelpha Knight. His mother, along with twin babies, died during the 1918 flu epidemic. He and his younger brother, Delbert, and their father lived with his grandmother, Hannah Bingham, in Wilson Lane until his father remarried a short time later to Mary Pearl Burton. She was a wonderful and loving mother. He graduated from Weber High School and lived most of his life in Marriott where he met his eternal companion and "sweet little farm girl," Marcia Regina Slater. They were married on November 23, 1933 in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. Delos was a manager for American Food Stores for over 25 years. He then worked as a Rural Mail Carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 17 years. Both of these career experiences were gratifying because of the people with whom he associated and the service he rendered. He loved all sports. He particularly enjoyed family fishing trips to Wyoming each summer beginning in the 1940's. With fly rod in his hand, trout had little chance of escape. In his early adult life he became highly skilled playing handball at the old Weber College gym. Later, as an avid golfer, Delos hit his second "hole in one" at the age of 89. He enjoyed watching all Utah college and university teams on TV. He especially rooted for BYU, the Jazz and the Atlanta Braves. He spent many hours reading church books, and he also read and re-read all of Louis La'mour's western novels. He was a general handyman, loved his woodworking shop, and yearly nurtured a large beautiful garden. He received much joy from sharing his harvest with family, friends and neighbors. When his grandchildren came to visit, they insisted on hearing him play his harmonica and sing (not at the same time) World War I and other century-old songs, of which he knew all the words. He possessed an astonishing memory of names, places and events. His memory and wit were undimmed by age and illness. His was a life of dedication to his family and his church. His family includes six children, 22 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren (three more expected) and three great-great grandchildren. As a life-long active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in numerous callings. In his later life he and his beloved wife served as Ward and Stake missionaries, a calling which they enjoyed immensely. They positively influenced many people and made lasting friendships with many full-time missionaries. Delos maintained a fervent testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and he knew and loved his Savior. He is survived by his five daughters and one son; Jean (Allen) Godfrey, Roy; Ronald (Marjean) Bingham, Orem; Shirley Ann (Darrell) Hart, Salt Lake City; Marilyn Priest, Riverdale; Anita (Roger) Hurst, Centerville and Diane Bingham, who has lived with him and served as his primary caregiver since the death of his wife in July 1998. He is also survived by his brothers, Delbert "Bus" Bingham and L.G. Bingham; his sisters, Maridene Wilson and Darlene Rainey. Preceding him in death were his wife, parents and brother, Robert. He loved and had a close relationship with his wife's family, many of whom preceded him in death. The family extends thanks to wonderful neighbors, Ward members, Legacy Hospice Care and others who have attended to his recent needs.
