Deverl W. Mantlo Obituary (1923 - 2001)

OGDEN - DeVerl (Dee) W. Mantlo, 78, died on October 8, 2001 as the result of a sudden heart attack. He was closing up his "homestead" at Flaming Gorge in Manilla. He had just completed a successful fishing trip with his friend, Dan Kimose and was packing up to come home. We're sorry to have him leave us and we will miss him immensely. Dee was born March 8, 1923 in Bear River City, Utah, the son of Richard Wallace and Rachael Miller Mantlo. He grew up and attended school in Bear River City. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy. He was stationed at Ford Island in Hawaii and received the Navy commendation medal for rescue work during the Pearl Harbor attack and he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After completing his military stint, he married Lena Ward on April 8, 1944. They were later divorced and he married Cheer Brunson in 1953. He loved and adopted her two daughters, Sherri and Vickie. Dee and Cheer later divorced and he and Lena were married again in 1978. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. Dee was devoted to his wife, Lena, and has been her strength, caregiver, and chief go-fer for the past several years. Dee worked hard all his life and was very frugal. He worked at Hill Air Force Base, owned a "service station" with a friend, Curley, and worked for Harold's Club in Reno, NV. Dee also drove a school bus for Weber County where he loved transporting the handicapped children to school. He has been retired for the last ten years. If the Denver Broncos were playing, Dee was watching them. He was an avid fan and could tell you how they were doing in the league. Dee always had a beautiful yard. His garden produce was prolific and fed many friends and family members. Whenever he went on a much loved fishing trip, he was always anxious to get home and make sure his garden was not too dry. Dee is survived by his wife, Lena; daughters, Sherri Swanke, Magna; and Vickie Mead, Beaverton, OR; brother, Richard (Judy) Mantlo, Heber City; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Joy (Lois Ann) Ward; sister-in-law, Carma (Eddie) Stegen; nieces and nephews; and his dog, Fritzi. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and one brother.
