Hyrum J. Sandberg Obituary (1919 - 2007)

Hyrum J. Sandberg ROY - Hyrum J. Sandberg, 87, was reunited with his eternal companion Norma, on January 19, 2007 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He was born September 24, 1919 to Daniel Swen and Susan Hammond Sandberg in Grantsville, Utah. Hyrum graduated from Grantsville High School in 1938 and enlisted in the Army in 1940. He was stationed at Ft. Douglas in Salt Lake City for a short time and was assigned to the Philippines. After the fall of Bataan, he was incarcerated as a Prisoner of War under the Japanese for three and a half years. He was a Bataan Death March survivor and part of his story was published in the book, Saints at War. Thanks to Senator Hatch's office, he was awarded the Bronze Star in a ceremony at Ft. Douglas in 2001. Hyrum married Norma Louise Thatcher on August 7, 1950. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. Norma passed away on August 11, 2005. He was a member of the Roy 2nd LDS Ward and served faithfully in many church callings. Hyrum was a skilled machinist and toolmaker and retired from Hill Air Force Base in 1983. He was an amazing craftsman and could make or fix anything with his metal lathe and milling machine. He loved to help anyone in need. Hyrum loved to travel on cruises, take family vacations, play golf, chess, dine out and spend time with his family. He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his four children, Susan (Cliff) Johnson, Vernal; Jerry (Rebecca) Sandberg, Bountiful; David (RuthAnn) Sandberg, Layton; Janet (Keith) Nielsen, Clinton; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one brother, Calvin Sandberg and two sisters, Donna Cook and Vivian Woolley. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. A special thanks goes to those who cared for Dad prior to his passing at Peach Tree Place in West Haven with hospice care provided by Community Nursing Services of Layton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roy 2nd Ward Chapel, 5127 S. 2400 W. Roy with Bishop Dave Winget officiating. Friends and family may call Wednesday evening, January 24th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary in Roy, 5865 S. 1900 W. and on Thursday at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden, Utah, where military honors will be accorded.
