Janet A. Garner Cecil Obituary (1938 - 2016)

Janet A. Garner Cecil March 10, 1938 - February 6, 2016 Janet A. Garner Cecil, loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on February 6, 2016. She was affectionately known as "Grandma Jan" to family and friends. She was born on March 10, 1938 to LeGrande Angell and Harriet Robinson in Salt Lake City. She spent most of her childhood in the Salt Lake area. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico during high school where she met Thomas A. Garner. She moved back to Utah and graduated from Granite High School. Tom and Jan were married in 1956 in Elko, Nevada. Together they had 4 children and made their home in Roy, Utah. The marriage ended after 17 years. She remarried in August 1975 to Herbert M. Cecil who passed away July, 1980. Jan retired from Weber State University in 2001 after 30 years of service. She was administrative secretary in the Music, Sociology, and Health Departments. Previously she worked for Commercial Security Bank in Ogden, Utah, and was a paraprofessional in the Weber School District at South Junior High. After retiring she spent 11 years working at Myers Roy Mortuary. Jan had a flair for decorating, loved to read and exercise. She completed several marathons and could often be seen walking, running, or biking the streets of Roy. She loved to spend time with family and took her children on memorable trips touring Europe and cruising Hawaii and Alaska. She enjoyed challenging her grandchildren to learn geography, do puzzles, and play card games. Jan resided in Roy for 55 years and was an active member of the Roy 8th -Municipal Park Ward. She completed a 3 year service mission at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. She moved to Smithfield, Utah and spent the past year and a half being closer to family. She was currently a member of the Smithfield 17th Ward that warmly welcomed her to Cache Valley. She was preceded in death by one grandson, James Barker. She is survived by her 4 children, David (Jamie) Garner, Smithfield, Utah: John (MaryAnn) Garner, Henderson, Nevada; Julie Thomas, Fruit Heights, Utah; Nancy (Lane) Barker, South Ogden, Utah; 20 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren; 5 siblings: Alwinn (Arlee) Angell, Gary Angell, Joyce Myrberg, Kent (Karen) Angell, and Becky (Gary) Thomas. Funeral Services will be Friday, February 12, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.at the Municipal Park Ward Building, 5930 S. 2200 W, Roy, Utah. Friends may join family at a viewing on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy, Utah, or prior to funeral services on Friday, from 9:45-10:45 a.m., at the church.
