Terry Richard Guthrie

–

Layton, Utah

In the early evening of October 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, Terry Richard Guthrie, a creative soul whose talents could captivate audiences and whose heart knew no bounds, peacefully passed from this world into the arms of his Savior. Born on July 8, 1954, at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Terry lived 71 extraordinary years filled with imagination, generosity, and an unwavering love for others.

As written in 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Terry embodied that verse every day of his life. Whether performing on stage, sharing stories, serving at church, or simply brightening a stranger’s day, he poured his heart into everything he did. A natural entertainer, Terry found joy in acting—his charisma lighting up both theater and film. Yet his greatest role was how he lived: with humility, laughter, and deep devotion to his family. He was a faithful member of Washington Heights Church, where his faith flourished under the guidance of Pastor Ron, who became not only a spiritual mentor but a dear friend. During Terry’s final months, Pastor Ron walked beside him and his family, helping him find peace, acceptance, and a deeper relationship with God. On August 31, 2025, Terry was baptized—a moment that marked the beginning of his journey home with a heart full of grace and faith.

A proud graduate of Roy High School and Colorado Technical University, Terry was a lifelong learner and an adventurer at heart. He loved to travel, fish, metal detect, and cheer on his beloved Denver Broncos. He had an unmatched gift for conversation—he could make friends in a grocery store line and leave people smiling long after he walked away. Whether gathered around a poker table, putting pennies it a slot machine, exploring new places, or laughing on the porch at sunset, he turned everyday moments into cherished memories. More than anything, Terry cherished time with his family. His favorite title was “Papa.” His grandchildren were his joy, and his eyes sparkled whenever he spoke their names. His home radiated warmth, laughter, and love—a reflection of the man who filled it.

Terry leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Deborah Guthrie, his partner in every sense of the word. Their marriage was one of laughter, faith, and steadfast love—a partnership that inspired everyone who knew them. They loved each other fiercely. He is also survived by his children: Becky (Eric) McLaren, Heather (Doug) Kirby, and Eric (Nicole) Guthrie; his beloved grandchildren: Madelyn Kirby, Brooklyn Kirby, Avery Lane, and Michael Lane; and his siblings: Jeff (Laura) Guthrie, Flint (Vickie) Guthrie, Tammi (Rodger) Caquelin, Theodore Meckler, Teresa Meckler, and Thomas Meckler. He now joins those who went before him—his parents Leonard and Beverly Meckler and Carol Hess and DeWayne Guthrie, and his brother Tony Guthrie—reunited in perfect peace and eternal joy.

Terry’s life cannot be measured in possessions or accomplishments, but in the love he gave and the countless hearts he touched. He was the friend who could make you laugh when you needed it most, the father who led with strength and compassion, the husband who adored without condition, and the grandfather who showed what unconditional love truly means. As we celebrate his life, may we carry forward his laughter, his light, and his faith. Terry reminded us all that a meaningful life isn’t defined by years—it’s defined by love.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Washington Heights Church, 1770 East 6200 South, South Ogden, UT 84405. Guests are encouraged to come casually dressed—Terry’s favorite colors were orange and navy blue—and to be ready to celebrate the man, the heart, and the legend who touched so many lives.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” 2 Timothy 4: 7–8

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Inspiration Home Health and Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and dignity they provided during Terry’s final journey home.
