Verland Derrell Jacobsen Obituary (1923 - 2009)

Verland Derrell "Jake" Jacobsen American Fork - Verland Derrell "Jake" Jacobsen, 86, died Monday, May 18, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer in American Fork, Utah. He was born February 20, 1923 in Salt Lake City, a son of Kenneth and Neva Rutledge Jacobsen. On April 12, 1945, Jake married Joan Thomas in Ogden, Utah. "Joanie" was the love of his life for 64 years. His family moved from Ogden to Mt. Isa, Australia in 1927. He returned to Ogden in 1937, and graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City. While attending the University of Utah he enlisted in the Navy Air Corp on December 9, 1942, becoming a naval pilot flying torpedo bombers. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. After the Navy, he was a surveyor/appraiser, auto-mechanic owning several service station franchises and a commercial property owner. He lived life to the fullest. His hobbies included riding cutting horses, bass fishing, working on cars, and being a cowboy from Australia. Jake is survived by his wife, Joan Jacobsen, American fork; one son and two daughters; Judith Lynn Erdmann, Tempe, Arizona; Bob (Jane) Jacobsen, St. George; Debra (Mark) Williams, Orem; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and his brother Richard (Marge) Jacobsen, Princeville, Hawaii and his #1 dog (Scoobie). He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son (Lewis Kenneth); one brother (Bob); two sisters (Marjorie and Neva Mary). Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden, Utah where family and friends may call prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Primary Children's Hospital, 100 No. Mario Capecchi Dr., SLC , Utah 84112.
