Vicki Nelson

–

North Ogden, Utah

Vicki Lynne (Barton) Nelson (79) passed peacefully from this life into the next on August 21, 2026, after a long struggle with multiple health problems which robbed her of her ability to walk and care for herself. It is a blessing to know that she is finally at peace with her loving parents and her Father in Heaven.

Vicki was born November 13, 1946, to Bill and Bessie Barton in Ogden, UT. She had many health challenges as a baby and was not expected to survive. She could not eat like a typical baby, and so her mother had to walk back and forth over a mile to the hospital and feed her through an eye dropper many times a day. Because of her mother’s devotion and great love, she was able to overcome her difficult first weeks. As a result, Vicki followed in her mother’s footsteps and grew and developed into an exceptionally caring and compassionate person who would do anything for those she loved.

Vicki graduated from Ogden High School and Weber State University with a degree in Library Science. She was very intelligent and curious. She studied French and especially loved Latin. She was a voracious reader of books and wanted to share her love of literature with everyone. She met her sweetheart Sheldon Nelson while still in High School and, after waiting for him to complete his mission, they were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on June 4, 1968. They went on to create their eternal family with 6 children. Vicki was so proud of each of her children and loved spending time with them and bragging about each of their accomplishments. She was the best listener and always made time for her family, even when that meant losing a lot of sleep. Vicki was the rock her husband, children and friends could always depend on.

During her life, she also followed her parents’ example by taking in people in need of a home for a time. Vicki and Sheldon took in and cared for several children and teens for many years, including her niece Julie who was in a wheelchair and needed a great deal of care, several native American children in need of homes, a teenage neighbor, and later Sarah, who would join our family forever. She also took her aging parents into her home and lovingly cared for them for many years.

Vicki loved traveling and seeing the places she had read about. Together with her husband, she had the opportunity to travel to Israel, a country she fell in love with after reading the book Exodus. She was very organized and loved her rainbow of pens, pencils and highlighters that she used to color-code everything in her life. She loved plaid shirts (especially green plaid), horses, cashews, cheese and, of course, chocolate fudge (no nuts). Vicki loved spending time in nature, camping and boating with her family, riding her motorcycle (really!) and later spending time with her children and grandchildren at their family cabin at Bear Lake. She loved playing games, sitting around singing and reading books to her grandkids. Sitting on the porch of the cabin with her sweetheart and children beside her, a glass of milk with ice, and grandchildren running and playing all around her was her idea of heaven on earth.

Throughout her life Vicki was a great lover of music, and her home had music ringing through the halls every day. She especially loved listening to the Tabernacle Choir, and any patriotic music. One of the highlights of the final years of her life was when she had the opportunity to sing with the Tabernacle Choir as a guest with her son. Vicki played piano and taught piano lessons to her children and others for many years. She also served in many church callings playing piano. She especially loved serving in the Primary playing songs for children and singing with them. Each of her children have songs burned into our memories because she was always singing. Vicki spent countless hours homeschooling 2 of her children who were struggling for years.

Vicki was a faithful member of the LDS church and she loved sharing her faith through her service in many church callings throughout her years, as a teacher, a cub scout leader, counselor, and as Relief Society President. She worked as a school librarian in her early career and later went back to school to become a Special Education Teacher. She loved working with children and touched the lives of many of those who struggled in school. She was devoted to her students and spent many extra hours working on their behalf. In fact, she loved her students so much that she and Sheldon took in and later adopted one of her former students who was in need of a home. Their daughter Sarah has been a great blessing to her family brought about through Vicki’s great love.

Vicki struggled with severe depression throughout much of her life, however, despite this great challenge, she never lost her faith in her Heavenly Father and in her Savior Jesus Christ. She cherished her faith and particularly loved the chance to share her faith with her children and grandchildren. She had a very curious mind and questioned everything. She was often heard saying that she had a very long list of questions to ask her Father in Heaven. Vicki is now with Him, and with her loved ones, having all her many questions answered.

Vicki was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Bessie Barton, her sisters Barbara and Marilyn, nieces Robyn and Julie and a nephew Vaughn. She is survived by her husband Sheldon Nelson, her children Shelley (Joseph) Burke, Nathan (Malinda) Nelson, Matthew (Jennifer) Nelson, Jeremy Nelson, Aaron (Heidi) Nelson, Sarah Nelson, the 16 grandchildren that she loved and treasured, and countless others that she advised, mothered and loved as her own.

Viewings will be held on Friday August 28th from 6:00 to 8:00pm and on Saturday August 29th from 12:30 to 1:30. Funeral services will be Saturday August 29th at 2:00.
