Zelpha Hatch Barker Obituary (1913 - 2001)

NORTH OGDEN - Zelpha H. Barker, age 87 passed away March 7, 2001 at Heritage Park Health Care Center. She was born August 31, 1913 in Fruitland, New Mexico, the eldest child of ten, to Ira Asa Hatch and Margaret Charlottie Gallagher. Zelpha is survived by three brothers, Richard (Nina) Hatch of Fruitland, New Mexico; Kenneth (Sharon) Hatch of Mesa, Arizona; Lynn (Betty) Hatch of Vista, California; and three sisters, Amelia (Rudy) Schurig of Mesa, Arizona; Elaine (Drenzel) Haws of Emmett, Idaho; and Alice (Hern) Wilkins of Springerville, Arizona. Zelpha is also survived by her son, Joseph K. (Moira) Head of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and three step-daughters, Joann (Alan) Dayley of So. Ogden, Utah; Carol (Rodd) Hadley of Bountiful, Utah; and Elaine (Ron) Lowder of Concord, California. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph D. Head; second husband, Wayne R. Barker; two brothers, Asa G. Hatch and Dale Hatch; and sister, Cosma Groggans. Her 39 year career as a school teacher began at the Horner School, a one-room school in northeastern New Mexico, San Juan County. There were ten children in the school, ages 7-14. Her salary was $77 per month. She received Her bachelor's degree from the University of Utah, and retired from teaching from the Weber County School District. She had been active in many civic and church activities and was a member of the North Ogden LDS 9th Ward. Teachers are listed in three classes. Those who are soon forgotten, those who are forgiven, and those who are remembered always with deep gratitude. Zelpha was the latter type and impressed many with a sincere desire to help them. Her influence has been great among many.
