Ardith "Gayle" Browning Obituary

Ardith “Gayle” Gaw Browning passed from this life at the age of 78, on October 7, 2021, in North Ogden, Utah. Gayle was the second child born to Raymond Claude Gaw and Irene Romero Gaw in Los Angeles, California. She spent her growing up years in Whittier and Yucca Valley, California and a short stint in Portland, Oregon. She adored her older brother, Ronnie, and was mostly an innocent bystander for his pranks. Unwittingly, she shared in the punishments he was dealt. The day that Gayle turned 14, she was given the most precious present ever: a baby sister, Addie. Gayle took Addie under wing and helped raise her into the woman she is today. Addie would beg her nightly to tell “just one more story” of her exciting childhood and she always complied.

Gayle attended elementary school in Whittier, California and graduated from Twenty-Nine Palms High School, in Twenty-Nine Palms, California. She was a good friend to all and loved her teachers, especially her Spanish teacher, Mrs. Galindo. Gayle was Homecoming Queen and voted “most likely to succeed” by her peers. Gayle went on to college at Brigham Young University and majored in the love language of French and minored in the other love language of Spanish. She was able to use these beloved languages in her employment.

Her first job was with Bank of America in Bell Garden, Yucca Valley and South Gate, California.

Gayle’s first marriage was to Robert Leonard Tunstall on August 5, 1961, in Yucca Valley, California and later divorced. Gayle married the love of her life, Curtis John Browning on December 17, 1965 in the Los Angeles California Temple.

Gayle was a loving wife, mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. There was nothing in this world that was more important to her than her family. Even though some lived far away, they were always in her thoughts and a prayer in her heart.

Gayle and Curtis followed her parents to Utah in 1976 and settled in Ogden, Utah, where they raised their family of four sons and one daughter. Gayle worked at Threads and Things, Get Away Today, as a substitute teacher and helping homebound senior citizens.

Gayle loved God, her Lord and Savior and her Church. She stood for truth and goodness and took her children to church. She served in many different church callings: Stake Relief Society Presidency, Ward Relief Society Presidency, Relief Society teacher and on many committees, Cubmaster and leader, Young Women, Sunday School teacher and Primary. She loved to take her Primary children to Salt Lake City before the Brigham Young Monument was made, for a picnic in the cemetery in which he was buried. She was a valiant visiting teacher and had the special ability to make the sisters she visited her friends.

Gayle’s love language was service to others, family, friends and even strangers. If someone in the checkout line didn’t have enough money, she’d happily step in and help out. She made endless kitchen towels, pillowcases, baby blankets, baby clothes and caramels for others.

Gayle is survived by her children: Christopher John Browning (Wendi) of Silverdale, WA; Jared Ray Browning (Melva) of Naples, FL; Benjamin David Browning, of Layton UT: Jacob Edward Browning (Kendra) of Ogden, UT; Elizabeth Ann Browning Edwards (Dave Edwards) of Ogden, UT: a brother Ronald Ray Gaw (Judy) of Middletown, RI and a sister Adrian (Addie) Gaw Leak (Tim) of West Jordan, UT. She is survived by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Gayle is preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandparents; many aunts and uncles and her sweet daughter-in-law Cynthia Lee Walker Browning.

She is already sorely missed, but we rejoice in knowing she is now with other loved ones who have been waiting for her. We know that we shall see her again and how beautiful that day will be.

The world is a better place because she was in it. We love you mom, sis, grandma, aunt, cousin; dearest Gayle. Rest easy, until we meet again.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Lodge at North Ogden and Envision Home Health and Hospice.
