Dessie Davis Stitzer

OGDEN – Dessie Davis Stitzer, 97, “the old night nurse”, beloved mother, grandmother and Great-grandmother returned home to her Heavenly Father on January 14, 2007. Dessie Davis was born in Byron, Wyoming in her grandfather’s log cabin January 28, 1909 to Sarah Elizabeth Cowley and Charles Ammon Davis. She was raised in Penrose and Powell, Wyoming and graduated from Powell High School. Dessie rode the train to Ogden to attend the Thomas D. Dee School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1931.

Dessie married Max Joseph Stitzer November 23, 1934, Max passed away in 1963.

She worked as a private duty nurse and at the Dee and the McKay-Dee Hospitals in OBGYN, retiring in 1974. After retirement, Dessie nursed friends and neighbors and enjoyed good times with the “golden girls”. She served as a matron in the Ogden Temple. Dessie, “the belle of the Big Horn Basin” was loved for her service to friends and family. She appreciated those same good friends and neighbors when she had to give up her car.

We are sure it was a happy reunion to be greeted by her mother, who had passed away when Dessie was 13 years old. At that time Dessie took the responsibilities of helping to raise her four brothers. Now they are a heavenly family.

Dessie is survived by her daughter, Susan (Bill) Ward, Carlsbad, CA; son Jim (Fonda) Stitzer, Ogden; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Alliance Hospice, especially Micki Olsen, and those at Aspen Care Center who cared for our sweet Dessie.
