Elsie Louise Turley Hess, age 92, died November 11, 2023, at Sandy, Utah. Louise was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Born March 9, 1931, she grew up as a tree-climbing tomboy in Logan, Utah. Her parents Lawrence Edward Turley, a machinist, and Florence McBride Turley, a former telephone operator, moved Louise and her siblings to Brigham City, Utah, during World War II. Five years later, on August 5, 1949, she married Wendell Hess in the Logan Temple. They lived happily together until his death in 2011.
Louise and Wendell foster-parented Henry, Woody, Joseph, Joseph, Bucky, Beverly, Andy, and Courage. Louise hosted several other people of various backgrounds who needed a home for a while. Together in the early- to mid-1990s, Louise and Wendell fulfilled three full-time missions to the Navajo and Hopi Nations for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Louise served the church in a variety of callings throughout her life and was an active volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America in the 1960s and 70s. She was a master gardener and a certified genealogist.
In addition to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, five of Louise’s children survive her: Kathryn (Clyde Williams), Louenda (Vance Downs), Brad (Cindy), Jim (Cindy), and Bob (Lisa).
Son Lawrence (Kris Adams) and daughter Shauna (Scott Sowles) preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at Brigham City Forest Hills Ward, 25 N. 300 E, Brigham City, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. All who knew Louise are encouraged to meet her family and renew ties that morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Brigham City Cemetery.
