Farr West - Emily Ruth Gossett, 46, passed away surrounded by family on August 5th, 2022, after a strong, courageous fight against cancer.
Emily was born on February 5th, 1976, in Ogden, Utah to Lynn and Teri Sawyer. She is the oldest of five children, endearingly nicknamed “Muffin” by her dad. She enjoyed a happy childhood with her siblings, large extended family, and “Bunch” family. Her sister and three brothers remember her as the best big sister ever. Emily attended school in Davis County and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1994. She excelled in academics and dance, serving as dance company president.
Emily met her husband of 28 years, Steve Gossett (“Gossamer,” as she lovingly referred), washing his mullet while working at a salon. In her words: “He came into my life like a tornado, a message from God that my plans are not His plans. He is my anchor and the person who stretches me most.” With Steve, Emily enjoyed adventure, humor, and continual surprise. They married in the Logan, Utah Temple on June 24th, 1994. After living in Roy, they moved their growing family to Farr West, a community they have loved and been loved by. They have two sons, Bracken and Logan, and one daughter, Ella, an absolute gift from heaven. She was overjoyed to gain another daughter in Bracken’s wife, Madolen, who she adores and claims as her own.
Emily loved traveling, camping, and game nights with her family. She adored her annual Swiss Days trip with the “Bunch” ladies. She enjoyed late-night soda runs with her girlfriends, who were some of her greatest supporters in both sickness and health, her Forever Friends.
Emily worked a variety of jobs in her life, and found a special passion in schools, as a “Drama Mama” with the Fremont High Theatre Department and later at Green Acres Elementary. In those places, she made countless friendships she treasures. In her words: “I can’t believe I get paid to do this.” She adores the children she worked with and told stories of their interactions often.
Emily was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was devoted to her callings throughout her life. She loves her ward family and appreciates all they’ve done to support her and her family. She has a strong testimony, especially of God’s timing and love, as well as the power of prayer. She always looked for the opportunity to serve, comfort, and love. Emily is remembered by many for her tight hugs, warm smile, and infectious laugh.
She found a special fulfillment in being “Auntie Em” and is remembered by her nieces and nephews as supportive, doting, and fun-loving. Emily loved supporting her sons’ artistic endeavors and watching Ella dance and tumble. She and Steve loved their 3-day weekends, date nights, and just being together. And Emily loved cuddling her sweet dog, Suzie, who never left her side. To Emily, her family was her everything.
Emily is survived by her husband, Steve; her three children, Bracken (Madolen), Logan, and Ella; her parents and siblings, Jared (Carrie), Jeff (Taryn), Amy (Matt), and Jaydan; two brothers-in-law, Bill (Andrea, deceased) and Ed; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her in-laws, Johnny and Joy Gossett; her sister-in-law Andrea Gossett; her grandparents Ruth Goodell, and Norman and Betty Sawyer.
Emily and family wish to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Stinnett and his staff at Utah Cancer Specialists, Sunny at Intermountain Hospice and Health, and countless medical professionals who eased her pain and prolonged her life with immeasurable care and compassion. The family also wishes to thank Myers Mortuary for their care and service during this time.
A viewing will be held the evening of Friday, August 12th from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 13th, with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. All services will be held at the LDS Stake Center located at 1745 N 2300 W Farr West, UT 84404.
