Eva Hartley Obituary

Eva M. Hartley, 94, of Ogden, Utah passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on February 2, 2023.

Eve was born on March 12, 1928 to Thomas and Manuelita Candelaria in Rosa, New Mexico.

Eve, with only an 8th grade education, continued on to excel in multiple careers. Her drive, wit, and curiosity were the motivation for her success. She worked at the military depot, where she received multiple awards and was recognized by the general for a promotion. She and her husband owned a Phillips 66 service station, where she was the first female to be a certified car inspector. After the service station, she was a very astute businesswoman. If there was a dollar to be made, Eve made it.

Eve had 4 children, Judy Caviar, Roy Vigil, Beverly Langford, and Richard Vigil. She met Ray Hartley on a blind date set up by her girlfriend. They quickly fell in love, and they married on February 20, 1970.

Throughout her whole life, Eve enjoyed crocheting and knitting, she was good at construction and loved to paint. She could fix any vacuum or sewing machine and collected all that she saw. Two of the things she loved best in life were to fish and work in her yard. Her favorite places to go fishing were up to her property at Sourdough or Strawberry Reservoir. At 80, she took a class to use the computer so she could sell her treasures online. She also learned to text so she could communicate with her great grandchildren. She was a woman of many interests and talents, and she never stopped learning. Eve passed on her passion for life to all those around her.

In retirement, Eve and Ray bought a calliope and started Adam and Eve’s Clown business. They brought joy and shared their love of clowning with the community of Ogden, Utah.

Eve was predeceased by her parents, her husband, sisters Mary Lawerence and Emma Ila, brothers Tom Candelaria and Michael Candelaria, and son Richard Vigil.

Eve was survived by her children Judy (Bob Caviar), Beverly, and Roy. Her grandchildren, Yevett Karpel (Ian Karpel), Cory Leetham (Theresa Leetham), Moneque Dobbs (Ed Dobbs), Lisa Higa (Mort), Jerry Vigil, Kerry Vigil, and Terry Vigil. Her great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was also survived by siblings Olive Gallegos, Bill Candelaria (Marilee Candelaria), John Candelaria, and David Candelaria. And many nieces and nephews.
