Obituary

Harold Gene Dovenbarger, 74, passed away peacefully on Jan 24, 2019 in SLC, UT surrounded by loved ones. Gene was born in Marietta, OH on July 18, 1944 to Carl Wesley Dovenbarger and Eleanor Mae Perdew.
Gene grew up in Mansfield, OH where he developed a love for American Flyer toy trains, motorcycles, and music. He played in HS marching band, excelling in the trombone. He joined the Navy and was accepted into the Naval School of Music at Anacostia, VA in 1963 and played at President Kennedy's funeral. He served in Navy Band at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Pensacola, FL, Great Lakes, lL, Norfolk, VA, Treasure lsland in SF, CA, and Memphis, TN. He also served on the USS Newport News, among others.
He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975 in Great Lakes, lL.
Gene was married and divorced to Sherry Windbigler and Dana Curtis.
After retiring from the Navy, he moved to Utah where met and married Karen Fisher in 1988,They were sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple. He attended Weber State University and worked for the USPS in Kaysville, UT and spent time as a substitute music teacher at Roy High. He mentored the Roy High Jazz band and marching band. He was a toy train and model RR enthusiast. In 1993 he started the Golden Spike American Flyer Toy Train club and they are still going strong.
He loved riding and collecting Suzuki motorcycles! He spent much of his youth on a motorcycle and rode cross country on several occasions. He also loved big band and jazz music. His biggest loves though, were his faith and his family and went to great lengths to keep in touch with them.

Gene is survived by his wife, Karen, his children; Joe (Lynn) Dovenbarger Bucyrus, OH, Laura (Dan) Butcher Nashville, TN, Amy Dovenbarger Cathers, Jeromesville, OH, Mindy (Todd) Stock, Murray, UT, Paul (Alicia) Dovenbarger, Centerville, UT, Wendy Cella,
Layton, UT, Lindsay (Allen) Dickinson, Logan, UT, Lisa (Kelton) Hooper, Roy, UT. 2 brothers Carl W Dovenbarger, Jr Crestline, OH, and Joel Dovenbarger, Durham, NC. 1 sister, Joyce (John) Taylor Shelby, OH, 24 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren,
He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father Glenn Eichler, 1st wife Sherry, and Troy German, son-in-law.

The family would like to thank the ICU staff at McKay-Dee Hospital, and Promise Hospital for their expert and loving care.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roy North Stake Center, 4250 S 2175 W, Roy, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Thursday,January 31, 2019 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy Utah, and prior to the services on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 10:00 -10:45 AM at the church.
Interment in the Clinton City Cemetery, Utah.
