Herbert "Herb" Dirks Obituary

It is with joy and hope, yet with a heavy heart, we announce the passing from this veil of tears, a talented and inspiring man, Herbert Linden Dirks.

Herb was born on September 30, 1940, in Panguitch, Utah. Herbert, affectionately known as Herb by those who knew him, was a creative, smart, and captivating individual who will be deeply missed. His brilliance shone through his many accomplishments and the positive impact he had on the lives of those around him. He was called to his heavenly home on May 12, 2023.

Herbert Dirks was a loving husband to his wife, Irma, with whom he shared a beautiful life since their marriage on June 8, 1962, in San Jose. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple. Their union was blessed with two children. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley.

As a dedicated mechanical engineer, Herb worked at Union Carbide and was later employed by Western Zirconium before his retirement. His innate aptitude and diligence earned him the prestigious President's Award on several occasions, testifying to his success in the field of mechanical engineering. Herb's passion and ingenuity extended beyond his professional life, as he was a certified falconer and enjoyed building inventions with rare earth magnets. Some of his proudest creations include a handcart, a cabin he built himself, and numerous innovative constructions.

Additionally, his faith played an essential role in his life, serving as a member of the bishopric, high council and an inner-city mission in Ogden with his wife Irma for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Throughout his life, Herb resided in various places, including San Francisco, Redwood City, Hot Springs AK, South Africa, Bishop, California, Ogden, and Logan. He is survived by his wife, Irma Dirks; their children, Lee Ann (Kirk) Dorius and Clinton (Rachel) Dirks; and his brothers, A. Stephen (Barbara) Dirks, David (Patsy) Dirks and eight grandchildren. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mary Ellen Dirks.

We invite you to leave your cherished memories and upload photos of Herbert Dirks on his memorial page, as we come together to celebrate the inspiring life he led.
