James Corbett McKay, 79, of Huntsville, Utah, passed away at home surrounded by loving family on February 18, 2023 after a short and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jim was born December 5, 1943 in Ogden, Utah to Neva Pearl Corbett and Perry Merrill Beckstead. Later, his mother married John Angus McKay who raised Jim as his own and adopted him.
As a child, Jim loved spending time with his Grandma and Grandpa Corbett where he developed a life-long passion for gardening and frugal living. He was also actively involved in 4-H raising sheep and in FFA raising cows. Jim was a life-long learner with a sharp, inquisitive mind. His love for reading started in his Grandpa McKay’s vast home library where he spent hours absorbing gospel doctrine books.
One of his many joys in life was the opportunity to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in England. When Jim returned home, he met the love of his life, Carson Walker. The couple was married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple June 17, 1966. Jim was a stalwart in the Church and faithfully served in many callings.
One of his greatest achievements was building a successful business—over 40 years—which allowed him the freedom to diligently serve 16 years as Huntsville Town Mayor.
Jim lived life to its fullest and is remembered for his positivity. Each morning he always said, “it’s going to be a great day!” He loved staying connected with friends and spending time with his grandchildren—especially taking them on walks through the river-bottoms, gathering around the campfire, and roasting marshmallows.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carson, of 56 years and six children: James Walker McKay; Huntsville, UT, Kymberli Turner; Lehi, UT, Stephani (Eddie) Edmunds; Draper, UT, Cydni (Daniel) Tavarez; Walnut Creek, CA, Melani (Carl) Cornista; Farmington, UT and Staci (Gregory) Mitzman; Boise, ID. Jim is also the proud grandpa of 12 grandchildren: Jaxton (Becca), Clansi, Dakota, Chloe, Ace, Presley, Zanna, Beck, Kiesel, Harper, Cruz, and Grey. He is also survived by his siblings: Susan McKay, Sandra McKay (Blaine), Jay (Paula) Beckstead and Richard (Kathleen) Beckstead…and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dan McKay and Sidney Beckstead.
One of the most important life lessons Jim instilled in us—is to see the good in others. As he always said, “paying a compliment and sharing a smile goes a long way.”
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: 277 South 7400 East Huntsville, UT. The Viewing will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m., Funeral Services at 11:30, and the Interment at the Huntsville Town Cemetery.
