Joan Lloyd Obituary

Joan Griffith Lloyd, age 83, devoted wife, endearing mother, kind, caring and fun-loving grandmother and great-grandmother, beloved sister, and cherished friend to all she met, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2022.

Joan loved her life, and she had a good life. She was born on December 15, 1938, to Delmas Quenton Griffith and Pearl Ruby Hagen Griffith in Salt Lake City, Utah. A December baby, she loved celebrating Christmas throughout her entire life. She spent her childhood on the East bench of Salt Lake City. She enjoyed playing games with her sister, brothers, and girlfriends, going on outings to explore Liberty Park, and watching double feature movies at the local theatre on 25 cent movie night.

She met her sweetheart, Ben Ashton Lloyd, and faithfully wrote to him during the two years he served a mission. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 21, 1961. As she entered this new phase of life, Joan’s love for family immediately extended to Ben’s family and they loved and embraced her in return.  She has a special place in her heart for Ben’s mom, Lucile, and they developed a cherished relationship.

Joan was blessed with six children, five boys and one girl. She loves them and they love, respect, and do their best to emulate her. As Joan and Ben raised their energetic young family, they traversed the country living in Scottsdale, Arizona; Bountiful, Utah; Amherst, New Hampshire; and eventually Brigham City, Utah. Every place she lived she developed caring, loving, cherished lifetime friendships. To know Joan was to be loved by Joan. She blessed everyone around her throughout her life.

Her greatest joys came from spending time with family and friends. She loved playing games together, spending time at the Bear Lake family cabin, reading to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, roasting marshmallows, singing, laughing, watching movies with ‘just the girls’ and cheering on the Utah Jazz. Each one of her grandchildren know that Grandma Joan has a special place in her heart just for them.

Joan was always positive and happy. Her life was dedicated to her family and to her Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Joan’s discipleship to Jesus Christ was evident in everything she did. She loved reading the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, they were a source of strength, comfort, and inspiration for Joan. She is an example of overcoming adversity through faith, gratitude, and service. Her father died early in her life, and she left college to quietly help, support and provide for her family. After the death of her father, Joan and her siblings developed a close and protective bond and they have blessed each other throughout their lives.

Joan faced health challenges and other trials with faith, determination, patience, and optimism. She found strength to navigate these by putting God first in her life. She loved to sing and was quick to laugh, even during times of great pain and trial. She was blessed with a gift of knowing when someone was shouldering a heavy burden. Countless people have received cards and notes from Joan in times of need. Her choice to find and create joy during times of trial has inspired all who knew her. She is a powerful example of kindness, quiet strength, joy through tribulation, and enduring love.

She is survived by her husband, Ben, five children: Michael (Holly) Lloyd, Jonathan (Marilyn) Lloyd, Grant (Lisa) Lloyd, Elizabeth (Mark) Lund, and David (Tristan) Lloyd; 19 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and her brothers: John Griffith, David Griffith and Steven (Margaret) Griffith.

Joan was preceded in death by her son Scott Griffith (Jana) Lloyd, her son-in-law Mark (Elizabeth) Lund, her sister Jan (Loring) Taylor and her parents, Dell and Pearl Griffith.

We know that Joan was welcomed by her family and friends when she passed on, undoubtedly, they were blessed as much by her as she was by them when they met.
