Salt Lake City – Joy Lynn Clontz was born August 16, 1954 in Las Vegas, NV to Jeanine Lund Clontz and Jeff Alan Clontz. She was the third of five children and grew up in Plain City, UT where she attended Plain City Elementary, Wahlquist Junior High, and Weber High School, where she graduated class of 1972. She also graduated from LDS Seminary the same year. Joy was a good student who excelled at anything she put her mind to and could not wait to graduate and see the world!
She was very athletic and enjoyed playing softball growing up. Willard Bay and Pineview Reservoir were her favorite places to water ski with friends, and she also learned to snow ski when she was sixteen. Joy loved music, especially rock bands, and even hitchhiked to a concert at the Salt Flats once! Joy always had an adventurous nature and loved to travel and try new things.
A few years after high school Joy moved to Hawaii where she lived on the island of Oahu for more than 20 years. This is where Joy was really in her element and truly happy. Joy met her life-long friend Darlene, and they were roommates for over 10 years. While in Hawaii, Joy worked mostly as a waitress, but also got her Real Estate license, and for a few years worked on a cruise ship throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The ocean was one of her greatest passions and she became a certified diver, logging over 100 dives. When Joy left Hawaii, she traveled to Australia and New Zealand where she spent several months, as well as the Caribbean and many US States and Canada. She then settled in Las Vegas for 10 years before returning to Utah in 2010.
Joy is survived by her siblings, Jeffery Clontz (Susan), Janet Bojak, Jill Soifua (Al), and Jerry Allen (Janet). She is preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Vern Sinsel, brother-in-law Rick Bojak, and her dear friend Darlene.
While battling multiple health issues over the last few years, Joy always remained independent and optimistic. She was a “free spirit” with so many interesting life stories to share. Joy will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
