Junell Lee “John” Diemel

1931-2022

Junell Lee “John” Diemel passed away at the age of 91 on June 26, 2022 surrounded by his family.

John was born to his parents, Martin Van Buren Diemel and Florence Palm Diemel, on January 15, 1931 in New London, Wisconsin. He and his family shortly moved to Sisseton, South Dakota. John later lived in New Orleans, East Los Angeles, Norwalk, Burbank, and Cerritos, California before moving to Eden, Utah into what he called the Eagles Nest, and finally moving to St. George, Utah.

He married Nola Moyes Simpson on August 18, 1972 and they were later sealed together in the Ogden Temple.

John was an elder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served with his wife, Nola, in the Ogden Temple.

He proudly served our country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Coastguard as a Quartermaster 2. John worked as a deputy sheriff and undercover detective for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Later he worked for the Department of Justice of the State of California. John also worked over 10 years as the security manager for Sears and later security for Northrop Aircraft. After his retirement and move to the Eagles Nest, he worked part time for the Standard Examiner and Gold’s Gym in Ogden, Utah.

John had a great love for golfing, surfing, going to Dixieland jazz festivals, bowling, writing, hiking, fishing, cooking fish, eating fish, anything fish.

John published his first novel, Sweetcorn, at the age of 91 and has written two other books that are still unpublished.

John was a very kind and humble man who loved to serve others. He loved his family, especially he loved his sweetheart, Nola.

John is survived by his wife, Nola; sisters, Darlene (Earle) Child, Betty Miano; brother, Jerry Diemel; his 5 children, Peggi (Gary) Nielsen, Brett (Trisha) Simpson, John (Leicha Ward) Diemel, John Patrick (Amanda) Diemel, Cindy (Kevin) Young; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Denever (Buzzie) Diemel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. at the ward building at 2335 North 4350 West, Plain City, UT with a viewing held prior from 10:00-11:10 a.m.

Interment will be at the Plain City Cemetery, 4373 W. 1975 N., Plain City, UT.

The Family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the St. George Regional Hospital for their kindness and wonderful care which he received.
