Kathryn Wight Obituary

Kathryn Thurza Young Wight, loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and sister, passed away on September 20, 2022, at the age of 89. Kathryn was born in Willard, Utah, on March 13, 1933, to Clarence Mathew Young and Thurza Myrtle Nicholas Young Kingston. Thurza served as the county recorder and chief operator of the old telephone switch board in Brigham City. She was left alone to raise Kathryn and her two younger sisters, and she relied heavily on her oldest daughter as she worked to support her family.

Kathryn grew up in Brigham City and attended Box Elder High School. She later met her husband of 71 years, Joseph Douglas Wight, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. She flew to Washington, D.C., and they were married at the Naval Air Station Chapel at Patuxent River, Maryland, on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.

Doug and Kathryn lived in Maryland until the Navy transferred them to Jacksonville, Florida, where they lived for the next three years and had two of their nine children. They were then assigned to NAS Alameda, California, for three more years before Doug left the Navy. They returned to Utah and briefly lived in Salt Lake City before moving back to Brigham City where Doug took a job at Thiokol, where he worked until his retirement.

Kathryn was busy during her years in the Brigham City Second Ward, having grown up there where she later returned. She taught classes in both Primary and Sunday School. She also served as Second Counselor in the Primary and Secretary of the Relief Society in the Brigham City Fifth Ward. Kathryn was also very active as a volunteer for the Utah Junior Golf Association. She played golf and enjoyed the game. She became the envy of her husband when she got a hole-in-one at The Barn Golf Course her first year playing.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Roberta “Bobbie” Baron, and her infant son Joseph Clark Wight.

She is survived by her husband, her sister Lorraine Hansen, and her children: Chris (Nadine) Wight, Debbie (George) Yates, Cynthia Valentine, Dianna Wight, Vicki Day, Curt (Shanel) Wight, Valerie (Mark) Keller, and Jason (Karrie) Wight. She had 26 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to express gratitude to the Pioneer Care Center in Brigham City and Enhabit Hospice for the wonderful care they provided in Kathryn’s final days.
