Heaven gained another angel as Merle Payne Edwards returned home to her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, She died from causes incident to her age. She was 24 days shy of 92 years of age. Her mind stayed clear and sharp to the end.

Merle was born on December 2,1925 to Ascel Kelsey Payne and Eve Louise Adams in Brigham City, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber State College. Merle married Leonard Maddock Edwards on September 8,1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three sons, Steven (Connie), Scott (Kristie), Barry and Linda.

Merle was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout her life. She served a mission in the North Central States and held numerous callings in the Primary, Relief Society, and Sunday School. She was also very talented and shared her musical abilities as the Choir Director, Assistant Ward Organist, and Ward Music Chairman. In addition to her church service, Merle worked as a library aide at Park View School and at the Weber County District Office. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Camp Paradise. She also taught piano lessons to her family and untold numbers of people from her community. Merle had a love of music, knowledge, family, the Gospel and gave unselfish service.

Merle was known as many things but one of her most loved title was that of Grandma. She holds a special place in her heart for her six beautiful grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and five great- great grandchildren. Grandma loved her family and always made sure that everyone was taken care of. She hosted weekly family dinners for her rapidly growing family into her 80’s. She wanted her family to stay close. She led the family by her example of love, faith, work ethic, and kindness.

During her 91 years on earth, Merle served, loved, and touched many lives. We love you Grandma and will treasure the memories and lessons we have shared. She is welcomed home by her parents, husband, sister’s; Gayla and Shirleen, brother Leon, and her great-grandson Trevor. She is survived by her brother Glen (Sandy) Payne, her children, grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank her neighbors and close ward friends who have watched over her these last few years and also the caregivers for the help and compassion shown during her final days.
