Ruby Lee Jones

ALPHARETTA, GEORGIA – Ruby Lee Jones, our precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at Ashton Woods Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, October 25, 2006.

She was born July 31, 1913 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to George and Mable Bernard Brown. She was raised and educated in Mississippi and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In 1943 she moved to St. Louis, MO where she became a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

In 1950 Ruby moved to Ogden, Utah; there becoming a member of New Zion Baptist Church. In later years she became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church until 1999 when she moved to Alpharetta, Ga.; there becoming a member of “Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.”

She was employed at Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft painter, but never neglected her family. While her husband, Prentiss Jones, traveled on the railroad for many years, Ruby was always there for her family throughout this period. She was a kind and gentle person.

Ruby had a special kind of love for her children and other children as well. She was a wonderful homemaker; she loved cooking, sewing, gardening and bowling. Friends and family will always remember her fabulous lemon meringue pie.

Ruby in many ways was an unsung hero in the Ogden community. Her work and devotion to children was always done quietly and without public acknowledgement. She demonstrated this by donating her time and personal resources to make baseball uniforms in the 1950’s for the Wall Avenue Community Children’s Baseball Team. Her community service continued as a foster parent, taking care of sick babies and very small children. In her care they became strong and healthy children.

While residing in the nursing home facility, (GA) she participated in an annual beauty contest with vigor until just recently. Ruby is remembered as being ahead of her time in business and her willingness to remain active.

We will cherish the memories of her and keep them in our hearts forever. The family feels blessed that she was in their lives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Andrew Harrison, Tom Johnson, Jr. and Prentiss Jones.

She leaves behind her three sons, David (Denise) Jones of Eureka, CA, Cleveland Jones of Alpharetta, GA, Clyde (Patricia) Jones of Oakland, CA; Patricia Johnson (Gray) of Ogden, UT and Estelle (Johnson) Loving of Los Angeles, CA; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

The family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the care that Ashton Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center provided for Ruby.
