Steve Hilton Obituary

Steve Hilton, loving husband, father, and friend, unexpectedly and peacefully left this world on December 13, 2023 at the age of 66. Steve was born on April 3, 1957 in Ogden, Utah to Don Keith “Joe” and Mildred Nixon Hilton. He graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1975 and went on to graduate from Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Steve worked as an EMT and fire department dispatcher for Ogden City. He also regularly volunteered alongside his father who served as the Ogden City Fire Chief.  In 1979, Steve began working at America First Credit Union in their Computer Operations department. He spent the majority of his career there as the Director of Research and Development managing innumerable IT projects for the company. Steve loved his America First family and they loved him. A running joke between him and his coworkers regarding the status of his projects was that “everything was 90% done.” After 42 years of service at the Credit Union, he retired in 2021.

His work at the Credit Union and his education were important aspects of Steve’s life but the most important thing to him was his family.  He made that obvious in everything he did. Steve met Laura (Hunt) Hilton at America First Credit Union and married her on January 20, 1989 at Hill Air Force Base. Sharing their workplace meant that they shared co-workers and friends, and they wouldn’t have had it any other way. They were inseparable. Steve loved caring for Laura and providing for her in any way he could. They enjoyed travelling together and were looking forward to their “trip around the world” as Steve would say. Steve and Laura have three beautiful daughters, Whitney, Katie and Tracie. Steve was a faithful and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, their family was sealed in the Bountiful Utah Temple on January 20, 2001. They celebrated this day together every year following, referring to it as “Hilton Day” - commemorating the beautiful promise of a forever family.

His family was his absolute pride and joy. Anyone who spent any time with Steve knew how much they meant to him. He loved to spoil, entertain, provide for, and protect them. The idea of his daughters growing up and moving on saddened him because he enjoyed their childhood so much. However, as they grew up, Steve developed deep friendships with them and was a personal cheerleader for each of them in their adult endeavors, including welcoming a new member of the family when Katie married Jeff Muntinga. He and Laura were looking forward to a new phase of life, as grandparents to their grandson due March 2024. Steve was overjoyed to hear of his impending arrival.

Steve was dedicated to upholding family traditions set forth by his father and grandfather.  He took his responsibility seriously but truly enjoyed carrying on the traditions such as the 4th of July root beer, Halloween and Christmas chili, New Year’s Eve and Day crab and steak, and so much more. He loved to play any game with his family, especially the family card game “Shanghai.” He was a kid at heart and enjoyed doing things with his family like going on roller coasters, visiting theme parks, playing pranks, traveling, cruising, motorcycle, and helicopter rides, etc. Although he knew the bond within his family was strong, he did everything he could to maintain and strengthen it.

Steve also truly cared about his community. As a resident of Riverdale for many years, he served on the Riverdale Planning Commission for eight years and on the Riverdale City Council beginning in 2020 until his death. He was recently re-elected and was looking forward to serve the city of Riverdale for another term.  He felt a true sense of obligation to help the police and firefighters in any way he could.

Family or friend, Steve had a way of making everyone around him feel so loved. His wrap-around hugs engulfed you and he didn’t let go until you did. He made everyone around him feel as if they were the most important person in the room. He listened intently to the life stories of others, offered advice when asked, and genuinely cared for the people around him. He leaves a legacy of genuine kindness, concern, and compassion that his daughters will try to emulate for the rest of their lives.

Steve was preceded in death by both of his parents, many other loved family members, and his little buddy (dog) Hinckley.

He is survived by his wife (Laura), three daughters (Whitney, Katie (Jeff), Tracie), his brother Rob (Renae), sister Nancy (Burt) and many extended family members (including those who felt like Steve was family).

We would like to thank the Riverdale City first responders for answering our call to help our Dad. We know you went above and beyond in his time of need and we’ll be forever grateful for your love, respect and shared grief during such a tragic and difficult time.
