Thelma (Montgomery) Shinney

Thelma Montgomery Shinney passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, May 26, 2023. She was 89.

She was born August 30, 1933 in North Ogden, the fourth child of Joseph Kimball Montgomery and Thelma Davis Hall. She grew up in North Ogden and Ogden. She married Richard Shinney on March 26, 1953 in Ogden. The marriage was solemnized one year later in the Salt Lake City Temple on March 26, 1954.

Thelma and Richard made their home in North Ogden where she lived the rest of her life. Together they raised five children, Sue Ellen Dunn, Lynn (Ann) Shinney, Doug (Marla) Shinney, David Shinney (deceased), and Ann (Karl) Hoffman. She has 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Thelma worked at Hill Air Force Base, IRS, and most of her career with the Forest Service. She still has friends from the Forest Service who call themselves the “old broads”. She enjoyed the regular lunches with those friends.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served many years as the ward librarian. She also served a mission with her husband for several years at Deseret Industries.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Vern Montgomery; sister, Patty Ellen Vining; sister, Ruth Bown; brother, Byron Montgomery; and her son, David Shinney. She is survived by her brother, Richard Montgomery; four children; and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held May 31, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Ben Lomond Cemetery, 526 E. 2850 N., North Ogden, Utah.
