Valmai Vaughan Obituary

Valmai Tolman Vaughan, 92, passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2024. She was born November 21, 1931 in Honeyville, Utah to Claudius and Rose Banks Tolman. After graduating from Box Elder High School, she attended Utah State, met and married J. Gordon Vaughan in 1953 in the Logan Temple. Together they raised eight children in North Ogden and have 28 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. Valmai devoted her life to serving her family, church, and community.

Throughout her life she served in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One calling she especially loved was preparing for and teaching Gospel Doctrine. She loved studying the scriptures. She loved learning and was an advocate of the Constitution. She was a member of the Utah Association of Women and served in many ways, including working on the state legislative committee to fight pornography.

Valmai was interested in finding the names and stories of her ancestors. She spent years doing Family History research. She was amazing on the computer and wrote and compiled multiple Family History binders complete with imported pictures. We grew up knowing and honoring our ancestors.

Valmai served with her husband, Gordon, on a CES mission to Perth, Australia, then another CES mission at Church Headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. She also used her computer skills for years as she served as scribe for Gordon with his calling as Patriarch. In her later years, Mom attended the temple two or three times a week with Dad, even throughout his years with Parkinson’s requiring a wheelchair. She devotedly took care of Dad until his death in early 2019. After Dad’s passing, Mom continued to faithfully attend the temple even in times of challenging physical health.

Mom was a great example of following the prophet and her greatest desire was to bring people to Christ. We cannot adequately describe the positive influence Mom has had on so many people. Mom and Dad rejoiced in their posterity. They taught their children by precept and example. They loved having monthly Family Home Evening with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her children Chuck (Lori) Vaughan, RoseMarie (Jim) Jensen, Michelle (Kregg) Knight, Rex Vaughan, Lisa (Kevin deceased) Bates, Camille (Dave) Halverson, Sharon (Tim) McCall and foster son Harlow (Nora) John and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Alice Lamborn, in-laws Letty Tolman Halladay, Cheryldene Johnson Merrill and Curt Hoskins who were like sisters and brother to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Gordon, infant son James Tolman Vaughan, two grandsons Tyson Knight and Danny Vaughan and son-in-law Kevin Bates and her 4 brothers Sterling, David, Harvey and Melvin Tolman.
