Obituary

Veran Glen Smith, much loved husband, father and grandfather passed away on March 27, 2019, at his home in Brigham City, Utah. Born on November 23, 1942, he is the son of Horace Sanford and Mildred Lola Borgstrom Smith. He attended Box Elder High School where he was student body vice-president and an outstanding athlete in baseball and basketball. In 1960 he was selected as an All American football player his senior year when BEHS won the State Championship.

While attending Utah State University he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He married Karen Tanner of Parker, Idaho, on August 21, 1964. Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. For four years he played on the USU football team, was All Conference and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers and the Minnesota Vikings. A change of plans took him back to USU where he continued his education and was a graduate assistant football coach. After a year of teaching and coaching in Phoenix, Arizona, he and Karen returned to Brigham City where he was a teacher, coach and later a guidance counselor at the Intermountain Intertribal School. He retired as a Training Specialist from Hill Air Force Base.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Veran served in The Brigham City 20th Ward Bishopric, in Primary and in the Scouting program. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, golfing and studying Civil War history. He made many wonderful friends throughout his life. His happiest times were spent camping and traveling with his family, his greatest source of joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jerry, and sisters-in-law Maureen and Jackie Smith. Surviving are his wife and four daughters: Julie (Gordon) Collins; Lisa (Nathan) Hunt; Jennifer (Eric) Norgate; and Alison (Robert) Workman. He loved and cherished his seven grandchildren: Tanner, Lauren, Abbie and Zane Collins; Hannah and Jonah Hunt; and Vera Workman. Also surviving are his siblings: Dale Smith; Carol (Charles) Barker; Scott (Kaylee) Smith; and Max Smith, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Viewings will be held on Wednesday, April 3, from 6 to 8 pm at Myers Mortuary, 205 South 500 East, Brigham City, UT, and on Thursday, April 4, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the Brigham City Stake Center, 650 Anderson Drive, Brigham City, UT.

The funeral service will be at 11 am on Thursday, April 4, at the Brigham City Stake Center, 650 Anderson Drive. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery,300 East 300 South.
