Josephine (Jo) Alice Whitaker Engberg (90) died, at her home in West Haven UT, on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13th, 2018 losing her battle with cancer. She was comforted and surrounded by family during her last days.
Jo was born on February 11, 1928 to Wilbur and Maude Whitaker in Newfane, VT. At the age of six, she lost her father to a gun accident. She graduated from Thetford Academy in 1946 and after graduation took a 2 year business course in Massachusetts. Josephine met and married Eric Engberg, an Air Force SSgt, on August 9, 1952 and soon became a busy mother of four. Air Force relocations happened every few years and included bases in MA, DE, IL, CA, FL, Spain, NJ and finally retiring to OR. After her husband’s death in 1993, she lived in VT for a couple of years with her brother Charlie and then relocated to Utah where her two sons and their families lived. Jo loved reading, quilting, stamp collecting, traveling, playing games and putting together puzzles. She became a Christian in 1958 and renewed her commitment later in life and became very active in churches in Klamath Falls and Medford, Oregon and taught children for several years. She loved to support missionaries and various charities, some until the end of her life. It is because of her personal relationship with Jesus Christ that she faced death peacefully, thankful for a full and meaningful life.
She is survived by her brothers Charles Whitaker, VT; Ken Whitaker, NH; and Ervin (Buster) Needham, VT. Her brothers Howard Whitaker, Gerald Whitaker, and Gene (Peanut) Needham preceded her in death along with her sisters Louise Bailey, Geraldine Whitaker and Jeanie Whittemore. She is also survived by her four children and their families: Anne (Annie) Rogers, Danville, VA; Stephen (Steve) Engberg, New Haven, UT; Michael (Mike) Engberg, Pleasant Grove, UT; and Geri Barringer, Medford, OR. She had 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
