Obituary

David Curtis Long, 40, was tragically taken from this life on October 8, 2018 in a road biking accident in Layton, Utah. He was born on October 9, 1977 in Kansas City, Missouri to George Louis Long and Nancy Claire Burrows.

Dave grew up in Salina, Kansas with his parents and two sisters, Christine and Claire. He graduated from McPherson High School in McPherson, Kansas in 1996. He loved playing soccer with his dad, and participated on his high school soccer team. He received a scholarship to play soccer for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Dave was drawn to the mountains, so after attending UMKC for two years, he transferred to Utah State University in Logan, where he met the love of his life, Jill Zweifel. Dave and Jill both served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; Dave in the Las Vegas, West Mission, and Jill in the England, London Mission. After returning home, they continued their courtship and were later married in the Idaho Falls, Idaho Temple. Dave graduated from USU in 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Information Systems. He worked at Myriad Genetics in Salt Lake City as a Unix Systems Administrator for the past 11 years, and valued his work and the relationships he made there.

Dave and Jill were blessed with three beautiful children: Connor, Averie, and Ethan. Dave loved nothing more than spending time with his family. Their favorite memories together include mountain biking, snowboarding, wake boarding, camping, and playing soccer. Dave also enjoyed coaching all of his children's soccer teams.

Dave was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including Elder’s Quorum President. He enjoyed serving, and was always there when called upon.

Dave had two great passions in life: his wife and mountain biking. His two passions came together when he succeeded in getting Jill into mountain biking. He was always patient, supportive, and encouraging as Jill learned the ropes. Dave and Jill loved being together, and often planned their dates and vacations around mountain biking destinations. They traveled to Oregon, Canada, and all over Utah in search of the the best trails. Dave also converted a large group of close friends in their neighborhood to mountain biking, and he always looked forward to their next big adventure together.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Jill; their children, Connor, Averie, and Ethan; mother, Nancy Long-Daffin (Dave); sisters: Christine Long, Claire Hartman (Karl); father-in-law, Steve Zweifel; mother-in-law, Pam Zweifel; sister-in-law, Jodi Erickson (Lane); brother-in-law, Jeff Zweifel (Angela); sister-in-law, Jaime Mickelsen (Zane); and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, George, and a sister, Carolyn.
