On Nov. 2, 2018 we lost our hero, Jean G. Nielsen., who passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home.
He was born on August 10, 1931 in Ogden, Utah to Carl and Ada Nielsen. Shortly after graduating from Ogden High School he joined the Air Force and served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. It was while he was stationed at Mather Air Force Base in 1954 that he met his sweetheart, Virginia.
Jean loved to see new places and try new foods. He loved the outdoors and spent many weekends taking his son, nephews, and neighbors hunting and fishing. He loved to camp with his family wherever he could find a spot to park his trailer. Every year he looked forward to going to the cabin in Northern California, where the family floated down the Trinity River and played cards long into the night. He spent hours in his garden, growing thousands of tomatoes that he shared with anyone who wanted them. If you looked for him on a weekday afternoon, you would find him at the Newgate Mall food court, hanging out with his buddies. He liked to tease and was a favorite of his nieces and nephews. He made any activity more fun.
Jean was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Family meant everything to him, and in June 2014 he was sealed to his wife and children in the Brigham City Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Van de Wetering Nielsen, and his children Terry Sheffield (Joel) and Kent Nielsen (Lana). He was loved and adored by his eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings, Quinton, John, Barbara, and Ray.
His family would like to thank all of the staff at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home for the care and kindness they showed him the last eight months of his life.
In Lieu of flowers please donate to the George Wahlen Veteran Home.
