Obituary

Gary D Esplin, 55, passed away on April 25, 2017 in Layton, Utah. Born in Ogden, Utah to Derrell T Esplin and Byrdie Roundy. Gary graduated from Hillcrest High School, in Midvale, Utah, studied at the University of Utah, and completed an apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 354 to become a Journeyman Electrician. He married LaRae Rice and together they had two sons, Artumus and Logan. They later divorced. Gary married Joy Watkins and he gained two step-daughters, Stephanie and Brandi, and had an angel baby boy with Joy. They later divorced. He then entered into a loving and committed relationship with Kathleen Kirkman who had three children, Courtney, Zachary, and Kyle Jeremiah. Kathy passed away in 2012. Gary and Joy reconnected and she asked him to marry her. They were wed on 10/11/12. Gary then gained another step-daughter, Rhiannon. He was a member of IBEW Local 354 and worked for AC Electric in his earlier years. He later joined the Maintenance team for Flying J Refinery, which became Big West Oil, and became a Construction Coordinator and a respected friend to many of his co-workers. He was passionate about astronomy, space exploration, and science. He enjoyed Star Trek, Star Wars, and science fiction. He also traveled and visited Mexico, Wyoming, California, and Nevada. He has gone rock hunting for sapphires and opals and had ambitions to learn to scuba dive in the Crater at Midway. At home, he enjoyed barbecuing and had previously worked on restoring a 1972 Chevy truck, nicknamed Elvira (Ellie) with his brother, Mark. He is survived by his wife, Joy, his parents, Derrell and Byrdie Esplin, his sons, Artumus (Michelle) and Logan, his brothers, Mark (Sherry) and Chad, and sister Terezza (Kelly) Anderson. He will also be fondly remembered by his step-children, Stephanie Hofeling, Brandi Wright, Rhiannon Smith, Courtney Kirkman, and Zachary Kirkman, as well as his many grandchildren whom he thought of as his own: (Stephanie Hofeling) Zachary, Joshlyn and Shyla. (Courtney Kirkman, Keith Robison) Gabriel, Allysa, Sara, Keith, and Kyle. (Zachary Kirkman, Ashley) Andrew, and Nicholas. Gary will be cremated and a memorial service will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017 between 6:00 and 9:00 pm., at Myer's Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy, Utah.
